Clinical Trials
“A clinical trial is any research study that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes.” (WHO)
Clinical trials offer an opportunity for patients to participate in scientific and industry research. In a clinical trial, participants receive specific interventions according to the research plan or protocol created by the investigators. These interventions may be medical products, such as drugs or devices, procedures, or changes to participants’ behavior, such as diet.
The following clinical trials are recruiting PSC patients. PSC Partners is collaborating with the pharmaceutical companies conducting these clinical trials by adding our patient perspective to the trial protocol and by sharing clinical-trial information with the PSC community.
Currently Recruiting in Canada
As of June 2025, there are two clinical trials currently recruiting PSC patients in Canada, and one actively running with recruitment completed. There may be other investigator initiated research projects in which you may be involved. Before participating in a study, discuss the risks and potential benefits with your health care provider.

- PSC Partners Seeking a Cure: (WIND-PSC) A Global MultiCenter Prospective Observational Cohort to Support Drug Development in Adult Patients With Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (WIND-PSC). Recruiting: PSC patients aged 18-75, without transplant, small-duct PSC, IgG4-related cholangitis, or cirrhosis. Canadian sites: Toronto General UHN, University of Alberta. - Ipsen Pharmaceuticals: (ELMWOOD) A Study to Assess Safety and Effectiveness of Elafibranor in Adult Participants With Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. Recruiting: For adult PSC patients. US, Canada and Spain study locations. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05627362.
- Mirum Pharmaceuticals: (VISTAS) A Study to Evaluate Efficacy and Safety of an Investigational Drug Named Volixibat in Patients With Itching Caused by Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, Recruiting: For PSC patients ages 12+ with any level of pruritus. 26+ US and Canada study locations. This clinical trial is studying volixibat versus placebo to treat pruritus (itch) associated with PSC. Volixibat works by reducing bile acids in the blood, which may decrease the frequency and severity of pruritus. An initial summary of final results of the trial are expected in the 2nd quarter of 2026. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04663308.
