Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms experienced by primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) patients. Despite the prevalence of this challenging symptom, the mechanisms that cause fatigue in PSC are poorly understood. In “Fatigue in PSC: Leveraging Scientific Discovery to Improve Well-Being,” Dr. Mark Swain presents scientific findings on the relationships between fatigue, brain function, and chronic liver disease, and reviews various approaches that physicians and patients may use to address PSC-related fatigue.

In this 90-minute webinar, Dr. Swain begins with an overview of fatigue, its health impacts, and its incidence as a symptom of PSC. He goes on to discuss fatigue in the context of liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), describing how reduced bile flow, liver inflammation, and gut inflammation can impact brain function to cause symptoms such as fatigue. Finally, Dr. Swain reviews techniques to address central fatigue in PSC patients. This section includes management frameworks for physicians (3 step approach, TrACE approach) as well as a discussion on the evidence, rationale, and limitations for several fatigue management options that can be considered for PSC patients. The webinar concludes with a 20-minute Q&A on fatigue and PSC.
